Frequently Asked Questions by Homeowners and Listers

Is there a demand for my home as private lodging?

Certainly. There are a number of times during the year when the demand for available hotel rooms outpaces the existing supply. During these periods visitors are willing to pay a premium for lodging. In addition, many visitors PREFER the comfort and amenities of a home to a hotel room. Often a listed home provides easier access to desired events or locations than remote hotels. Other visitors like to share the expense of lodging among a group which makes a home which sleeps 4 or more a desirable alternative.

How much does it cost?

The charge for a 1-year listing is 1 year is $79.00. If you rent your home just one day out of the year you're making money.

Where do I stay during the rental period?

Private home listing is certainly not for everyone. Many people list furnished rental properties which are not their primary residence. However, if the home you wish to list IS your primary residence then you obviously need somewhere to stay. What many people choose to do is use money earned and the time available for a vacation of their own. Use it as an excuse for that weekend away - and best of all you're often receiving rental fees in excess of what you'd spend. Visit friends, visit family - and get paid at the same time!

How much should I charge?

That is all up to you - Set a price that you are comfortable with - either per night or per week. Take into account all the things your home has to offer such as the number of sleep spaces, a fireplace, a swimming pool, location, etc. and charge accordingly. Most homeowners also vary rates based on availability. Ex. Homecoming week is always a sellout for local hotels - most homeowners charge more during high demand periods.

Also, many homeowners require a minimum night stay during high-demand periods.

Do I ask for a deposit?

Yes. One or two nights stay is a good rule of thumb. EventLodging.net does provide a basic rental agreement which includes a deposit that you can modify and use to suit your needs.

How often do I have to rent my home?

Again this is up to you. Some homeowners make their residences available year round. Other homeowners prefer to take advantage of those high-demand periods one weekend a year. There is no minimum that your home must be available.
